Less work, More money / CRT Recognition

posted by Breadmower on Sat 27th Jan, 07 at 10:05:15

It's been a little while since my last real post, so I thought a very short catchup might be in order...

First bit of news is that I'm now doing my day job part time, and am going to dedicate half the week to becoming a professional fire-eater, with the intention of joining the circus sometime in the next six months. Seriously - that's completely true... if you replace "fire-eater" with "freelancer"... and ignore the bit about the circus. Anyway, I'll be doing web stuff and networking - normal kind of stuff for me. Hopefully it'll also give me some time to work on my two Top Secret Plans (collectively known as The Masterplan). Possibly even some more regular blog posts, perhaps. Hey - it could happen.

The second (and more important) piece of news is that - wait for it - I was mentioned (specifically, by name - ;-) ) in the blog of none other than Perplex City Academy's Kurt McAllister. As I'm sure you're all aware, things have been hotting up in Perplex City - Scarlett's been , and Kurt needed our help find where she's being held, by . Breadth-first search of a series of interconnected nodes based on time in transit across links of known cost? No problem, Kurt - I'm on the case. A short while later, I'd sent over the results of my search and some supporting data. My results matched those of a few other cube hunters, and Kurt to the Perplex City Police Department. They're now - if you've got a few hours free on Tuesday night (starting at 19:00), then they could .

If the above made no sense to you, then you obviously aren't helping to find the Receda Cube. There's a (real) £100,000 reward, you know...

Are you sitting down?

Now, this might come as a bit of a shock to you, but not only am I doing a blog post, but I've also been updating my personal site. OMG ponies!!! (as I believe the young people say).

That's your lot for tonight - I don't want to over do it ;-)

Cool Yule, y'all

New rig time...

posted by Breadmower on Sun 12th Nov, 06 at 21:02:25

So, I managed to destroy my main computer yesterday, which is a bit of a pain in the rear end to say the least. I'm now having to use one of my spare computers (the one which was going to be my fileserver) - it's only a 1.2Ghz / 256Mb RAM system, so it's a bit of a step down :-(  Still, it means that I get to buy myself a new rig.

Only problem is that I'm more of a software specialist - hardware isn't really my thing, and I really don't like shopping for hardware :-( Couple that with the fact that any serious upgrade is going to mean that a lot of stuff I could salvage out of my current dead rig isn't going to fit in the new system. Things like my graphics card (which I'm perfectly happy with) will need to be replaced, as new boards all go for PCIe cards.

I've got some vague ideas as to what I might get - probably some kind of Intel Core 2 Duo thang, but past that, I've not really decided. I gather that some fancy quad core things are coming out this month, so I might wait until they're out, as that should drive down the cost of anything I'd be likely to buy. Have to wait and see how desperate I get ;-)

Interesting things happen when your phone's off

This was going to be a post about the nice, relaxing evening I've had at the spa (which was rather enjoyable, more details later, hopefully), but I've just got home to discover that someone's driven a Transit van at speed into the wall between our house and the neighbours' garden before speeding off into the sunset. No-one's hurt or anything, but if I'd parked my car a little further back, or if we hadn't have been out in Smonkey's car, we would've had more of a problem (breezeblocks flying through the air).

The neighbours has been trying to phone me, but I'd taken the very unusual step of turning my phone off at the spa (first time in probably 18 months!), so they couldn't get hold of me. Ah well. Apparently the police are going to send a car over later to check it out, and until then we can't move any of the debris, so I can't get my car out, and we've had to park the other on the road. Still, I'm not complaining - at least they didn't plough into my car when I was in it, like other members of our little community here.

It'll just give me something to do over the weekend. On that note, the new Mastermind feature that was supposed to be unveiled on Sunday is probably going to be put off until next week. Note, however, that that's no excuse for not getting over there and playing a game...

Mmmm... iiinteresting...

I found out something interesting (and a little unexpected) today, but I won't be able to talk about it for a while. Sorry if I've piqued your curiosity. Note: we're not having a baby or anything - calm down.

Head in a vice

Evening all,

I know it looks like I'm slipping into a "blog once or twice a month" habit, but I'm going to make a concerted effort to write more. My excuse for not writing anything today is that I woke up with this crazily bad headache, and it'sonly started to wear off over the last two hours. Just not fun. Hopefully be back to normal tomorrow.

In other news, the "little idea" that I mentioned a few posts earlier is almost done. The target is to have it appear about this time next week. Watch this space.

Yarr!

Busy / Tired

Busy + Tired = No blogging. How about I make up for it by writing something cool over the weekend? Deal?

If you're lucky (and I'm feeling in the mood), I might even knock together a little idea that I came up with in the car today. Could be entertaining... watch this space...

Remember this

posted by Breadmower on Mon 11th Sep, 06 at 20:07:23

You have free will and the ability to think for yourself. People and organisations will try to take this from you. Do not let them. Following blindly without questioning reduces you to nothing but a puppet in someone else's play.

Remember this: they might not be who you expect.
