What's this newsletter all about then?

Welcome to the Codex newsletter, where we bring you up to speed with what's going on at the site and - more importantly - let you know the results of the weekly leaderboard, and what accolades have been awarded to the movers and shakers this week.

Play or grey

Oh yes - finally an update to the scoring system. After spending months writing formulas (formulae?) on the whiteboard, I finally threw everything away and went for something simple: basically, the person who has played the fewest games gets frozen out of the leaderboard. That's it.

It's only been in place for a week, but I think that it's making some difference already - the highest ranked player on the leaderboard played 17 games, rather than the normal 5 that we see there. I'll leave it in place for the moment, and we can see if it continues to encourage people at the top of the board to play more games.

Where've the graphs gone?

You've probably noticed that the graphs on the statistics pages have disappeared (and that this week / last week are now on separate pages). I need to do some optimisation to how the graphs are generated, as they're slowing everything down and putting extra strain on the server (at the time, they were just put together quickly, which means they're quite inefficient). They'll be back shortly, and (possibly) look a little nicer too.

Leaderboard update

When the leaderboard closed for the week, here's how things looked (rank - user - average guesses):

1st - Breadmower - 4.29 (17 games)
2nd - Bunnery - 4.95 (20 games)
3rd - DOM - 5.03 (29 games)
4th - sharon - 5.17 (47 games)
... - Mr.Puzzlewit - 5.23 (13 games)
5th - Sarah - 5.5 (36 games)
6th - bin1 - 5.77 (52 games)
7th - Smonkey - 7.04 (24 games)
8th - Toad - 7.82 (17 games)
9th - Barb - 8.07 (14 games)

Total games played: 282

Prizegiving

This week:

  • The Secret Admirers award (for receiving the most challenges) goes to Bunnery, who was challenged 27 times
  • The Open Relay award (for sending the most challenges) goes to sharon, who sent 57 challenges
  • The Turing award (for the most solo games played) goes to sharon, who played solo 18 times
  • The Enigma award (for sending the hardest codes) is awarded to Smonkey, whose codes took an average of 7.88 guesses to break
  • The Plaintext award (for sending the easiest codes) is given to Mr.Puzzlewit, whose codes took only 4.5 guesses to break on average
  • The Quick Thinking award (for the fastest game) goes to bin1, who completed a game in 5 seconds
  • The Deep Thought award (for the slowest game) goes to bin1, who took 1 day 23:59:52 to finish one game
  • The Upgrade award (for most improved average) goes to Breadmower, who decreased their average by 1.71
  • The Downgrade award (for most worsened average) is given to bin1, whose average increased by 0.84
  • The Brute Force award (for the highest average) goes to Barb, who took an average of 8.07 guesses to break codes
  • The Bletchley award (for top codebreaker) is this week awarded to Breadmower, whose average number of guesses to break codes was 4.29 over 17 games

Now, this is where things get a little tricky for me. I normally keep a bit of an eye on the leaderboard during the week, so that I can make some meaningful comments here, but this time I was distracted by wondering how the freezing would work out. You know, maybe I should have made some notes about what was happening with that, as I can't remember who kept getting frozen out. In fact, maybe some kind of log detailing what happened in the week would be a good idea. Mmmm... interesting. Sorry, I'm getting sidetracked.

Anyway, Breadmower finished the week in first place, with an average of 4.29 over 17 games - he was frozen out a few times over the course of the week, but managed to clock up enough games to stay in at the end. Things looked a little tricky in the middle of the week, when Bunnery managed to overtake him, but he managed to play enough games to force her hand, and she moved back down into second place.

In terms of awards, Breadmower won the Bletchley and Upgrade (improved by 1.71). Sharon won Turing by playing the most solo games (18) and Open Relay by sending the most challenges (57), whilst Bunnery won the Secret Admirers award by being the most popular (received 27 challenges).

Despite being frozen out of the leaderboard at the end of the week, Mr.Puzzlewit won the Plaintext award (for setting the easiest codes - taking only 4.5 guesses to find on average). Smonkey was responsible for the hardest codes (taking an average of 7.88 guesses to find on average) and wins Enigma. Once more, Bin1 wins both Quick thinking and Deep Thought for taking a speedy 5 seconds to finish one game, and a more pedestrian 1 day 23:59:52 to complete another. Finally, Barb won the Brute Force award for her final average of 8.07 over 14 games.

Congratulations to everyone who won an award - they'll now be visible on your personal statistics pages so that the rest of us can marvel at your skills.

Predictions

So, what did Bin1 and Bunnery think would happen this week? Well, we'll never know, it seems, as Bin1 suggested that they predict what's going to happen next week, so that they didn't have the advantage of seeing the current leaderboard.

Bin reckons "1 sharon, 2 laura, 3 Bunnery, 4 DOM", whilst Bunnery thinks "1. bin1, 2. Breadmower, 3. Laura, 4. Sarah". Let's see who's closest...

Last time, the winner wasn't obvious, so I asked each of them to put forward their cases for winning. Bunnery thought that "Since White is the "combination of all the colours of the visible light spectrum" (according to wikipedia) and two whites is double that - there's just no contest, How about a limerick this week, bin1??", whilst Bin1 countered with "Agreed, In the past I've claimed the same conclusion: not using the same reasoning. 2 white pegs tells you more than a lone black peg". Hmmm, not much of a counter-argument, really.

Limericks it was, then. Bunnery gave a topical example for Bin1:

"There was a young man from the college
who possessed lots of specialised knowledge
the college went bust
he said "I'm not fussed"
I'm off on my dream global voyage!"

Bin1's attempt was:

"There was a not-so-young man who said, '[bleep] it'

Another week, another forfeit

Losing at codex

is so complex

I'm left here writing a limerick

PS - hope the smut remover is working...."

Fortunately the smut remover was working - just as well, as he actually did use some naughty language in there - yes, some people get offended by the word "darn", because, ummm, that's what he said, yes. Still, despite that, I think it qualifies as a limerick. The man from Del Monte, he say "yes" - that'll do, Bin1.

Until next week...

...Codex seems to have stopped! No-one is playing.

Maybe it would be better to disqualify the bottom 2 with the least number of games played (not just so I can get to the top!!) so that one naughty person (Hi Sarah!!!) can't scupper it for everyone else!

Sooooo - if we're not playing Codex - how about another limerick?

Can't claim to have written this one myself - but it did make me laugh out loud :-)

But nothing is worse

as that snowy owl asking, "O RLY?"
